Halloween Games

So I guess (unofficially) the next Steam Sale will be starting on October 29th for fall/Halloween (and Happy Birthday to me!). Sadly, that's too late to actually enjoy for Halloween, so what's a good list of video games to play leading up to the Holiday of Horror? Well, as someone who missed out on a lot of good games back in the day, I'm going to list below some of the things that I'm going to be playing or replaying (and specifying accordingly). I don't plan on actually finishing any of these before the month is out, but I'd like to at least get a good start on most of them.

1) P.T. (Replay)

This will be a bittersweet play through for me. I'm still not emotionally over the cancellation of Silent Hills, given that the game series is one of my favorite of all time.  There's something about deeply rooted psychological horror wherein you're as much the monster as the creatures around you that just speaks to me. Perhaps it's the bitter irony and hopelessness that the games exude? Perhaps its the insurmountable odds, or just the incredibly unnerving monsters that make you as uncomfortable as well as scared. Either way, the true horror is that this game will never see the light of day, but at least I have P.T.

2) Bioshock

I never actually played these games. I tried to once, and it's a long story as to why I never picked it up (GameFly is the devil). Nevertheless, a few lucky excursions to my local GameStop delivered the first two into my hands for the PS3, and a Steam Sale gave me Infinite for an insanely good price. Will I get through them all in October? Probably not, but if I can at least take a good chunk out of the first one I'll consider this month's endeavor a large success.

3) Knock Knock

I'm kind of cheating here. I've already started playing Knock Knock and I think I lost the save file when I forgot to bring it over to my new PC. Starting over isn't the end of the world, I wasn't that far into it, but I'm kinda bummed because I had a pretty good game. Regardless, Knock Knock was worth the $15 I paid for I feel. It's Tim Burton art style and 2D/3D art and movement make for some really fun gameplay. I'm not sure what the hell is actually going on in the game, but that's part of the fun. It's done by the same people who made Pathologic, which is another game I should really play. The game is charming even when your sphincter is puckered beyond human capability from fear. The sound and art really bring in the atmosphere, and like I said before, the Tim Burton-esque feel that the style gives the game makes it all the better in the end.

4) Alien Isolation

I honestly keep forgetting that I have this game, and I'm really disappointed in myself for that. This game looks amazing, and I'm a HUGE Alien(s) fan, so the prospect of playing this is very exciting for me. I hope they're able to keep it from breaking any of the continuity laid up between Alien and Aliens, and that it's not a lot of tense waiting and weaponless running sequences. I've heard nothing but good things so I'm sure it won't be any of that, but these days that's become a painful norm of which I'm not a fan. On that note...

5) Outlast

I was never going to play this game, but it was part of a Humble Bundle and I eventually figured 'what the hell?'. I'll give it a shot this coming month, but I don't anticipate getting very far with it. Outlast never really interested me, and I doubt playing the game will change my mind. I'll happily be proven wrong, but I'm not counting on it.

6) Five Night's at Freddy's

Another one I'm not planning on getting very far in. I watched Markiplier play and the camera transitions give me a headache. Unless there's a way to turn that off, well, Night 1 being completed will count as a small victory.

7) Ib (Replay)

Hey, finally another replay! Have you played Ib? It's one of my favorite games! A college friend introduced me to it and since then I've fallen in love. A little girl lost in an art gallery has to solve puzzles and avoid monsters with her flamboyantly gay friend Garry. (He's not really gay, at least it's not specified, but the hinting is slathered pretty heavily into the dialogue).  This game isn't so much jump out and make you poop your pants scary, but more of the uncanny valley type of scary. The creature design is really good, and even though its a pixelated horror game (made with Wolf RPG Maker 2000 engine) the art is still magnificent (art gallery art notwithstanding). The level design is also very creative, and the add on of a suspicious ally and the various different ending possibilities make for a wide range of replay-ability. Ib is a free game that you can access here, and I highly suggest you go and play if you haven't already! It'll only take a few hours to complete, and you'll be so glad you did!

8) Silent Hill 1 (Replay)

As I stated above, Silent Hill is one of my favorite series. This one is further down on the list however because I actually just recently replayed it and I'd rather give the slot over to something else if a better option comes up.

That about wraps up my list right at the moment. I might throw one of the F.E.A.R. games into the mix if I have the time as I keep starting and restarting those games and never getting very far.

If you can think of anything that I ought to play instead of any of these, let me know! I'm always looking to add to my games library even though I have such a backlog that I don't really need to, but so be it.

Happy Halloween everyone! I'm sure I'll be writing a few posts on these as I progress through my list. Let me know if you have a list and what's on it!
